We’re going to Borneo!
We’ve decided that we’re going to take a vacation this month, and head to Borneo for 1 week. About 2/3 of the island of Borneo is part of Indonesia, and is called Kalimantan. It’s well-known for it’s diversity of flora and fauna, and is home to fresh water dolphins, orangutans, proboscis monkeys, a wide variety of birds, giant butterflies, and some HUGE flowers, called rafflesia. Rafflesia is a genus of plants found in Southeast Asia with flowers that range from about 8 inches across to over 3 feet in diameter! They’re parasitic plants that live in vines, and the flowers apparently smell like rotting meat. I don’t think I’ll be running up to smell them if we see them, but it would still be interesting to see some.
Kalimantan also happens to be a center for precious and semi-precious gemstones in Indonesia, so I’m hoping to buy some jewelry supplies while we’re there.
I’ll try to take lots of photos to share, and tell you all about our jungle adventure.
